Missing Tourist Found Dead After Kayak Accident in Holbox

More than 20 boats participate in the search operation off the coast of Holbox island

Holbox, Quintana Roo — A tourist from Mexico City was found dead Sunday morning after disappearing while kayaking off the island of Holbox, authorities said.

The victim, identified as Jesús Manuel “N,” went missing around midday Saturday after falling from a kayak near a group of friends. When he failed to resurface, companions immediately alerted island authorities.

A large-scale search operation was launched, spanning from Playa Norte to Punta Cocos. More than 20 vessels participated, including units from the Mexican Navy (SEMAR), civil protection personnel, the port captaincy, local tour boat operators, and civilian boats sent by the Chiquilá municipal authority.

The search resumed at 5:00 a.m. Sunday after being suspended at sunset the previous day due to darkness. At approximately 10:00 a.m., rescue teams spotted the body about two nautical miles offshore in the Punta Cocos area.

The body was brought to the island, where it awaits the arrival of state prosecutor’s office investigators and forensic medical examiners for processing and eventual release to family members. Officials have not released further details.
