Playa del Carmen — The issue of micro-mobility is included within the new regulations of the Urban Development Plan (PDU) for Playa del Carmen. Following several working meetings with municipal authorities, the proposal for the new mobility regulations is now in its final stage, confirmed Fernando Peinberg, owner of Beach Scooters.
Users Must Fulfill Specific Requirements
This regulation establishes obligations for users of bicycles, scooters, and electric skates, who must comply with specific requirements, such as the registration of units, carrying lights, and moving in an orderly manner.
However, the businessman warned that, so far, no sanctions have been contemplated for motorists, taxi drivers, or public transport drivers who invade the spaces designated for this type of alternative transport.
"After some working meetings, we have reached the final proposal for what the regulations will be, which will soon be in effect. The regulations contemplate some articles that were previously there. Now micro-mobility is added as part of vehicles; there must be a registration, they must have lights, there will be an obligation to have certain things, to circulate in a certain way," said Peinberg.
Call for Sanctions Against Motorists
In this sense, Fernando Peinberg emphasized that, although the changes represent a positive advance for the city, it is fundamental that the regulations be equitable and contemplate sanctions also for those who put both micro-mobility users and pedestrians at risk by invading exclusive lanes or areas, since order and road safety depend as much on compliance with the rules as on civic awareness.
"We are also not seeing sanctions for the users or drivers of taxis, cars that invade the spaces for micro-mobility. If they are going to demand it from us, it should also be even, in the same regulations, those sanctions for users of cars, public transport, buses that invade the mobility and are not sanctioned, that prevent us from circulating freely," he stated.
