Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Mexican authorities intercepted a fisherman carrying protected pink conch and a starfish during a coastal patrol near Playa Azul, officials announced Monday.

The Mexican Navy, acting through its Coast Guard functions in coordination with the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Commission (Conapesca), detected the illegal fishing activity during a surveillance operation in the Yum Balam lagoon area.

Authorities found the individual diving for marine life and transporting 14 pink conch specimens along with one starfish in a kayak. Both species are subject to environmental protection schemes due to their ecological importance.

When the fisherman failed to produce permits for the capture, authorities seized the small vessel and fishing gear as part of efforts to prevent illegal extraction in protected natural areas.

The case has been referred to appropriate agencies to determine legal responsibilities.

Officials released the seized specimens back into their natural habitat since they were still alive. Authorities stated they will maintain constant patrols in the area to detect and sanction such practices.

The Mexican Navy reminded the public that it maintains emergency response lines for maritime incidents and citizen reports as part of its strategy to combat illegal activities affecting Mexican Caribbean ecosystems.
