Palenque, Mexico — From January 1 to June 15 of this year, the Maya Train has transported more than 551,000 passengers across southeastern Mexico, according to its director general, Oscar David Lozano Águila.
Lozano Águila stated that this figure represents 45.93% of the train’s annual goal to move 1.2 million passengers in 2025. The Maya Train is one of the flagship projects of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Steady Ridership Despite Limited Operations
“Since the start of operations, we have transported 1.26 million people,” Lozano Águila said. “Even with only half of our rail fleet in service and during the low season, we maintain an average daily ridership of 3,320 passengers.”
He emphasized that these numbers reflect “a punctual, efficient, and humane service, backed by world-class infrastructure and by men and women committed to Mexico and this great project.”
Announcement Made During National Lottery Event
Lozano Águila shared these statistics during the 2848th grand prize drawing of the National Lottery (Lotería Nacional), held Friday evening at the Maya Train station in Palenque.
For this drawing, the National Lottery issued a special ticket featuring the image of Tz’ak-bu Aha, the Red Queen of Palenque, a figure from Mayan royalty. The winning number, 14412, claimed the top prize of 17 million pesos.
A Symbol of Transformation
In his remarks, Lozano Águila described the Maya Train as “not just a transportation system but a symbol of the transformation of southeastern Mexico.” He highlighted that its stations, inspired by ancient art and millennia-old architecture, pay tribute to Mayan civilization—much like the lottery ticket issued for the event.
“The Maya Train is and will continue to be a modern mobility network that connects communities, energizes regions, and paves the way for development,” he said. “Its comprehensive vision integrates connectivity, tourism, culture, and freight, activating investment, employment, and well-being.”
Honoring Indigenous Heritage
Lozano Águila praised the National Lottery for honoring the Red Queen, stating that the institution “joins with sensitivity and commitment in efforts to preserve and dignify Mexico’s indigenous cultures.” He added, “This space is not just a railway hub but a place where history travels.”
He also expressed pride in hosting the event at the Palenque station, calling it a privilege to showcase the project’s commitment to sustainable mobility, economic growth, and tourism.
Future Expansion and Economic Impact
The director reiterated that the Maya Train is turning rail infrastructure into a tribute to Mayan culture while serving as a regional network that unites territories, uplifts communities, and promotes nature, cultural, and adventure tourism.
He noted that the train’s upcoming freight service will soon open new logistical and economic routes, benefiting southern Mexico.
