Land Ownership Woes in Playa Del Carmen – Urgent Issues Unveiled

Residents of remote communities in Playa del Carmen are facing challenges due to the ongoing problem of land regularization. This issue has created uncertainty around their property rights.

The problem largely stems from individuals who are selling large areas of land without having first developed them or ensured the provision of basic services. This directly impacts those who are looking to establish their own properties.

The thirteenth councilor and president of the Indigenous Affairs Municipal Committee, Juan Humberto Novelo Zapata, stated, "Many families are trying to claim a small piece of land to call their own, but they are encountering numerous legal and social barriers due to this issue."

The lack of land regularization also hinders agricultural producers from accessing federal programs and government assistance. One of the key prerequisites for these supports is proof of address, a document that many do not possess due to the irregular status of their lands.

Novelo Zapata urged authorities to step up efforts to regularize these lands and provide more development opportunities for these remote communities. "It's vital to address this issue to ensure citizens have access to basic services and the support they need to enhance their quality of life," he concluded.
