Journalist Luciano Núñez Presents New Book on Maya Canoe Experience in Cancún

Author Luciano Núñez presents his new book 'Mi sal, el remo y la tormenta' about the Maya canoe experience in Cancún

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Journalist and author Luciano Núñez will present his new book, “Mi sal, el remo y la tormenta,” this Thursday at Playa Langosta in Cancún’s Hotel Zone. The event coincides with International Book Day.

The book chronicles Núñez’s participation in the Maya canoe journey between Cancún and Isla Mujeres during July and August 2025. This ancestral practice, once performed by the Maya people as an offering to connect with natural cycles, served as the foundation for his literary work.

“It’s not just about paddling. It’s first an inner journey with oneself and, over time, with others,” Núñez explained. The narrative captures the extreme fatigue, fear, and shared awe experienced alongside dozens of canoeists from diverse nationalities and social backgrounds.

For Núñez, the Maya canoe experience represented a lesson in humility. He describes the collective effort as “howling in the tribe” and aims for the book to serve as a balm in chaotic times—an attempt to quiet external noise, heal wounds, and understand the rhythm of water.

The presentation, scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, will feature Argentine editor Diego Jemio, who collaborated with Núñez on the novel “Magníficens Cancún.” Local officials, fellow writers, and members of the canoeing community are expected to attend.

“Paddling is a metaphor for life. It involves effort, pleasure, technique, and moving toward the most splendid sunrises,” Núñez said.

The author invites readers familiar with his political analysis and journalism to explore his literary side. He views reality and fiction as two sides of the same coin that help decipher the enigmatic nature of existence in the Caribbean.

Ultimately, the book documents the millennia-old connection between Cancún and Isla Mujeres, celebrating the spirit of the Maya canoe and the human bonds forged at sea.
