Isla Mujeres’ Las Iguanas Park Nears Completion After Years of Neglect

Construction progress at Las Iguanas Park in Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo

Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — The renovation of Las Iguanas Park has reached 90% completion, marking the recovery of a public space that remained neglected during the early years of the current municipal administration, despite other parks receiving attention during that period.

The project includes construction of a jogging track, public restrooms, a zip line, exercise equipment, and lighting, aiming to reactivate the space and create suitable conditions for family gatherings and physical activity.

Las Iguanas Park had been abandoned for years, a situation that contrasted with other municipal interventions since the administration began, where various public spaces were remodeled in an initial phase.

Only now, in a more advanced stage of the municipal government, has this specific location been addressed, raising questions about prioritization criteria for public works and attention to spaces that, despite their deterioration, were not initially considered.

Beyond the timing of the project, the park’s recovery represents a necessary action for the community, particularly in areas where lack of adequate spaces limits social interaction and recreational activities.

With the project nearing completion, the challenge extends beyond delivering infrastructure to ensuring its maintenance and actual use by residents—one of the most complex tasks for any administration—as effective recovery of public spaces remains a constant demand in various parts of the municipality.
