INEGI Confirms Quintana Roo Surpasses 2 Million Residents

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Quintana Roo has surpassed 2 million residents for the first time, according to definitive results from the 2025 Intercensal Survey by INEGI, Mexico’s national statistics agency.

The state’s population stands at 2,095,074, which amounts to 1.6% of the country’s total.

Nationally, Mexico counts 130,393,389 residents. The State of Mexico remains the most populous entity, with 17.5 million people.

Quintana Roo now ranks above Baja California Sur, Aguascalientes, Colima, Zacatecas, Tlaxcala, Nayarit, Morelos, Durango and Campeche.

Steady population growth

The INEGI data also show a significant rise in the state’s population. In 2020, Quintana Roo recorded 1,857,985 residents. Five years earlier, in 2015, the figure was 1,501,562.

That translates to growth of 12.7% over five years and 39.5% over a decade.

The results also reflect the weight of migration in the state’s growth, with Quintana Roo continuing to draw large numbers of people from other parts of Mexico.

Migration drives growth

The survey estimates 212,883 migrants over the age of five living in Quintana Roo. Of that group, 53% arrived for work and 34% for family reasons.

Nationwide, 82% of the population lives in the state where they were born, while 16.7% live in another state and 0.9% reside outside the country.

In Quintana Roo, 48.31% of residents live in their state of origin, while 49.22% previously lived in another state.

INEGI also estimates that 50,325 people in the state were born in another country. Of them, 36% hold Mexican nationality by naturalization.

About the survey

The 2025 Intercensal Survey was conducted from Oct. 6 to Nov. 14, 2025, with more than 44,000 interviewers taking part.

Unlike the decennial census, the survey uses a selected sample to generate estimates on the characteristics of the population and its housing.

With the new results, Quintana Roo crosses the 2 million mark for the first time in INEGI’s definitive population figures.
