Human Remains Found Near Ka’an Lu’um Lagoon in Tulum

Tulum, Quintana Roo — A farm worker cutting wood in dense vegetation near the Ka’an Lu’um lagoon came across what appeared to be human remains, drawing police officers and State Prosecutor’s Office personnel to the site off the Tulum–Felipe Carrillo Puerto highway.

The discovery was made at kilometer 218 of Federal Highway 307. According to initial reports, the laborer entered the woods to cut timber and noticed what looked like human bones, prompting him to alert the authorities.

Officers from the Municipal Preventive Police reached the area and confirmed the find. Investigators located a skull, fragments of a spinal column and ribs, as well as a black Pirma brand sneaker.

Police cordoned off the site to preserve possible evidence, and agents from the Investigation Police and forensic experts from the State Prosecutor’s Office later arrived to process the scene and remove the remains.

Preliminary estimates suggest the remains may have been at the site for close to two years, although officials said forensic studies must confirm that timeframe. Wildlife in the area may also have contributed to scattering the remains.

Authorities have not yet identified the person to whom the remains belong or established the circumstances of the death.

The remains will undergo anthropological and genetic testing aimed at determining characteristics of the victim and advancing toward a possible identification, as well as estimating the approximate time of death to the extent that the evidence allows.

The Prosecutor’s Office has kept the investigation open to clarify the origin of the remains and to determine whether any missing-person report could be connected to the discovery.
