Playa del Carmen Flooded After Heavy Rainstorm

Officials from the Civil Protection, Risk Prevention, and Firefighters Department, along with Municipal Public Services, inspected areas of the city severely impacted by flooding. The floods were a result of heavy rainfall brought on by a low-pressure system that moved through the area on Thursday afternoon.

The city's municipal president, Estefanía Mercado, led the inspection tours. She supervised the city's work crews who were tasked with draining water from streets and avenues affected by the downpour. One such location was the intersection of Lilis and Constituyentes avenues. Here, Mercado noted not only the impact of the heavy rain but also the issue of litter blocking the drains.

Mercado emphasized the city's commitment to restoring normalcy to the roads as quickly as possible. She also reiterated her plea to residents to avoid littering, especially during periods of heavy rain, as this exacerbates the city's flooding problems. Mercado then moved on to inspect the intersection of Olivos Avenue with Flor de Romero, and concluded at Azulejos Avenue with Sur Avenue, in Villas del Sol.

At these last two locations, Mercado announced plans to use a dredging machine to manage the overwhelming volume of water. As a precautionary step, Azulejos Avenue with Sur Avenue was cordoned off by Civil Protection until the water level could be reduced.

According to a weather report issued on December 26 by the State Coordination of Civil Protection (Coeproc), a low-pressure system located west of the Caribbean Sea and the influx of tropical maritime air from the Caribbean Sea towards the Yucatán Peninsula resulted in cloudy skies, periodic heavy rain, and electrical activity across the state of Quintana Roo.
