Heavy Machinery Work on Holbox Island Sparks Environmental Alarm

Heavy machinery operating near mangroves on Holbox Island

Holbox, Quintana Roo — Residents and environmental groups on Holbox Island have denounced alleged ecological damage from heavy machinery operations near Punta Cocos, warning that the work threatens fragile mangrove ecosystems and coastal habitats.

The operations are taking place in an area known as Punta Casco, where activists say mangroves have been cleared and the shoreline altered. The groups argue that the work endangers the island’s delicate environmental balance and the wetlands that support diverse wildlife.

Of particular concern is the potential impact on habitats used by flamingos and other migratory birds for nesting and resting. Environmentalists noted that Holbox has specific regulations protecting mangroves and natural resources, and called on federal authorities to review permits and assess any damage.

As of now, no official information has been released regarding permits for the work in the area.
