Tulum, Quintana Roo — A man was fatally shot Wednesday night in an armed attack in the La Veleta neighborhood, and the two gunmen who opened fire fled the scene.
The attack occurred at about 8:50 p.m. on Calle 2 Sur, between Calles 33 and 3 Poniente. Preliminary reports identify the victim as Gerardo N., also known as “El Gato” and “El Güero.” He was driving a Ford Mustang when two men on a motorcycle caught up with him and fired multiple shots.
The gunfire caused N. to lose control of the vehicle, which crashed into the facade of a nearby building. The attackers escaped after the shooting.
Municipal police officers were first to respond and confirmed the man had no vital signs. Officers cordoned off the scene to preserve evidence.
According to unofficial reports, the victim had previously been arrested for possession of a handgun and had operated a car wash in the area.
Investigative police agents and forensic personnel from the State Prosecutor’s Office processed the scene and opened an investigation to determine the motive for the killing.
