Cancun, Quintana Roo — A video of a massive crocodile casually strolling across a golf course in Cancun has gone viral, drawing attention to the coexistence of wildlife and humans in the popular tourist destination.
The footage, shared on TikTok by a user named Rosario, shows the reptile — estimated to be between two and three meters long — moving across the fairway. The video has amassed over 14,000 likes and 192,000 views.
Many commenters identified the crocodile as “Panchito,” a well-known local reptile that lives near a prominent hotel in the area.
While the sighting might seem unusual, crocodile encounters are well-documented in Cancun. Remnant patches of vegetation near water bodies serve as the last refuges for the species, and habitat fragmentation increasingly pushes them into human-dominated spaces.
The video underscores both the possibility of coexistence and the serious issue of habitat loss driving crocodiles out of safe areas.
