Tulum, Quintana Roo — A tanker truck carrying fuel caught fire Thursday on Federal Highway 307 at the north access to Tulum, near the toll booth, triggering a large-scale mobilization of emergency crews.
The blaze sent a massive column of black smoke into the air that was visible from several points around the area, putting motorists and nearby residents on alert over the risk posed by the fully loaded fuel unit.
Firefighters, civil protection personnel and security officers set up a safety perimeter and partially restricted traffic to keep people away from the scene.
Crews used chemical foam and water to knock down the flames and cool the tanker’s tank, aiming to prevent the fire from spreading or escalating into a larger emergency.
Authorities have not confirmed any injuries or deaths. Officials have also not determined the cause of the fire, identified the company that owns the truck, or established exactly how much fuel it was carrying.
Firefighting operations were still underway at the site, and drivers were asked to avoid the north access while the emergency response continued.
