Tulum, Quintana Roo — Vicente Francisco Aldape Moncada, the former treasurer of Tulum, has been sentenced to three years and nine months in prison for carrying a firearm without a license, Mexico’s Federal Prosecutor’s Office (FGR) announced.
Aldape Moncada was detained on July 2 at Terminal 2 of Cancún International Airport after National Guard officers reviewing his luggage by X-ray detected military-grade items in one of his suitcases.
Officers seized two firearms, two magazines and 33 rounds of ammunition, all of which were entered into the case file.
The FGR said the sentence was handed down through an abbreviated trial, a fast-track procedure in which federal prosecutors presented evidence establishing the former official’s responsibility for the crime.
The investigation was handled by the Specialized Regional Control Prosecutor’s Office (FECOR) after National Guard personnel turned over the suspect.
Once the proceedings concluded, a federal prosecutor brought the evidence before a judge to support the charge, and the FGR secured the prison sentence.
In addition to the prison term, the ruling requires Aldape Moncada to pay a fine of 100 Units of Measurement and Updating (UMA), equivalent to 11,731 pesos, as requested by prosecutors.
