Financial Literacy Workshop for Women Launches in Playa del Carmen

Women participating in a financial literacy workshop in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A free financial literacy workshop aimed at strengthening women’s economic independence will take place Thursday at the Sayab Planetarium, with plans to expand to nine of Quintana Roo’s 11 municipalities.

The program, titled “Finanzas que Transforman: Mujeres Construyendo Comunidades” (Finances that Transform: Women Building Communities), is backed by Banamex’s financial education division and H Boost Project.

State Deputy María Jimena Lasa noted that women have historically faced disadvantages in financial matters, as economic management often fell solely to men. Today, many women are entrepreneurs, micro-business owners, or work from home while handling caregiving duties, making it essential to provide tools for better financial decision-making.

The workshop will cover family asset management, economic organization, and strengthening small businesses, with training led by financial education specialists.

Idania Gamboa, from the Women’s Institute in Playa del Carmen, said the event will also offer free psychological counseling and legal advice. Many women who seek help from the institute are rebuilding their lives after leaving violent relationships, and such tools help foster economic independence and new opportunities, she added. The workshops also create support networks among women entrepreneurs and workers.

The session begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Sayab Planetarium and is free to attend.

Lasa said the program will later continue in Cozumel, Puerto Morelos, Benito Juárez, Isla Mujeres, Bacalar, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, and Tulum. In Cancún, the event will be held at the Teatro de la Ciudad with Mayor Ana Paty Peralta, while in Isla Mujeres, Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde will participate.

Lasa also highlighted recent legislative initiatives on substantive equality, including a reform to apply the so-called “Ley 3 de 3” to notaries public, preventing child support debtors from holding that position. She is also pushing for changes to prevent aggressors from gaining custody of minors while facing violence-related legal proceedings.
