Yucatan License Plate Renewal Deadline Nears; Penalties Begin July 1

Yucatan license plate renewal deadline approaching with penalties starting July 1

Mérida, Yucatán — Vehicle owners in Yucatán have less than a month to complete the state’s 2026 license plate renewal process before penalties take effect on July 1, the Public Security Department (SSP) announced.

As of May 27, the renewal program had reached more than 65% completion among active vehicles with plates from the 2020-2024 period, according to the SSP. The original deadline was December 31, 2025, but the state granted a six-month extension that ends June 30.

Officials urged drivers not to wait until the last days to complete the process.

“Having valid plates not only keeps the vehicle registry updated, it also provides legal certainty about vehicle ownership and strengthens identification and road safety efforts across the state,” the SSP said in a statement.

Starting July 1, vehicles circulating without current plates will face administrative penalties under Yucatán’s Traffic and Road Safety Law, including warnings, fines, and possible vehicle retention.

Owners can complete the renewal online or at service modules in Mérida — including the Yucatán Service Center, Siglo XXI, City Center, Caucel, Kukulkán Sports Complex, and the Transportation Department — as well as in Valladolid, Progreso, Tizimín, Tekax, and Izamal.

“Anticipating the plate renewal is an act of responsibility that benefits everyone,” the SSP added.
