Cancún — Amid the scent of copal, marigold flowers, and the murmur of the Caribbean Sea, the Janal Pixan Festival has begun in Puerto Juárez. The magical celebration pays tribute to the faithful departed and keeps the essence of Maya and Mexican traditions alive with an emotional cultural, artistic, and gastronomic program.
The event commenced with a Maritime Procession, a colorful moment in which Catrinas and Catrines disembarked to applause, the sound of conch shells, and candlelight, evoking the connection between the earthly and spiritual worlds. Minutes later, municipal authorities led the start of a parade that departed from the dock on 45th Street toward the entrance of this sub-delegation, which is the origin of Cancún.
During the parade, set to the rhythm of Mexican music, the adorned skeletons marched amid applause and smiles, accompanied by families, neighbors, and visitors, both national and international, who enthusiastically joined the cheerful popular festival.
Once the procession concluded, the festive atmosphere moved to the main stage, where the public enjoyed an evening full of music and talent. Performers included the academy "Pasión y Baile," the singer Marcela Anzures, the quartet "Los Príncipes de Cancún," the folk ballet "Herencias de México" by Antonio Flores, the mariachi "Vino Tinto," and the group "The Best Band y Ramón Nieves."
Furthermore, the Catrina and Catrín Contest was one of the most striking activities of the night, as participants displayed spectacular attire inspired by the iconic character created by Mexican illustrator José Guadalupe Posada, a symbol that has transcended borders and become an emblem of the Day of the Dead worldwide.
During this celebration, attendees were also able to enjoy the different pavilions installed for the whole family. These included exhibitions of altars, handicrafts, artistic areas, and displays of foods characteristic of the offerings, such as pibipollos, tamales, champurrado, chocolate, and pan de muerto made by staff from the Municipal DIF, as well as sweets and snacks that complement the rich gastronomy of the Yucatán Peninsula.
It is important to mention that this gathering can be enjoyed until November 2. However, on November 1 and 2, starting at 6:00 p.m., the Parque de las Palapas will be dressed in cultural heritage with the thirteenth edition of the "Cena de Ánimas," where stage and musical activities will animate the evenings.
