Bacalar, Quintana Roo — A family traveling by motorcycle says their cat, Wicha, disappeared after local police officers conducted a search of their belongings early Saturday morning.
According to a social media post by the family, a father and his son were traveling to Cancún when they ran out of gas and money. They decided to spend the night in a public dome in Bacalar.
In the early hours, a patrol car approached them. The family says officers searched their belongings and then loaded some items into the police vehicle. After the search, Wicha was no longer with them, the family claims.
The father went to the police station the next morning to ask about the cat but was told to submit a formal written request to begin an official inquiry. Dissatisfied with the response, he posted the story on social media along with photos of the cat, describing her as a domestic pet, not a stray.
Wicha is a docile cat easily identifiable by her red harness. Social media users in Quintana Roo have been sharing the photos in hopes of locating her.
As of Sunday, authorities had not issued an official statement regarding the incident or confirmed whether any records related to the pet exist.
The family continues to ask for public assistance in finding Wicha and learning what happened during the reported police check.
