Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Families of inmates at the Chetumal Social Reintegration Center have come forward with allegations of widespread abuse and neglect inside the prison, calling for an urgent investigation.

According to the complaints, guards have physically assaulted inmates as a means of control and intimidation, starting from the moment they enter the facility. Relatives also reported that prisoners are subjected to prolonged isolation in punishment areas without proper oversight, leaving families unable to learn the true condition of their loved ones.

Medical care is another major concern, with inmates reportedly only taken to hospitals when their conditions become critical. Families also cited irregularities in how money sent to inmates is handled, as well as poor food quality.

The relatives are urging human rights organizations to conduct a comprehensive review of the prison and implement measures to protect inmates and those who have spoken out.
