Mexican Government Initiates Land Expropriation for Tren Maya Project

The Ministry of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu) has issued three decrees for the expropriation of land for public use in favor of the Tren Maya project, a significant tourism initiative in Mexico.

The decrees, published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF), announce the expropriation of 53 hectares in the ejido, or communal land, of Maxcanú in the state of Yucatán, 102 hectares in the ejido of Puerto Morelos, and 59 hectares in the ejido of X-Hazil y Anexos, both in the state of Quintana Roo.

The first decree details the expropriation of 53 hectares in Maxcanú, with 96 areas set aside for parcelled use and 52 hectares for common use. This land will be used for the construction and operation of the Tren Maya Project and its associated works, located in Polygon I and II.

The Tren Maya project, managed by the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur), is required to pay an indemnification fee of $21,697,658.76 for the expropriated land. This figure was determined by the Institute of Administration and Appraisals of National Assets (Indaabin) and is outlined in the decree.
