Armed Attack on Family in Cancún Kills Man, Leaves Woman Critical

Cancún, Quintana Roo — A family was ambushed by gunmen Friday night in the Villas Otoch neighborhood of Cancún, leaving one man dead and a woman in critical condition, authorities said.

The attack occurred on Calle Abedul in the Supermanzana 247 area. According to initial reports, the family had been summoned to the site to receive the keys to a plot of land. Instead, armed men opened fire on them as they arrived.

The man died almost instantly at the scene. A woman was struck by gunfire. In desperation, a woman believed to be a relative loaded the injured woman into a Volkswagen Jetta and headed for Hospital General de Cancún, fearing her injuries were severe. While traveling along Avenida Kabah, the driver lost control of the vehicle and hit an embankment on the side of the road.

Paramedics and police who arrived at the crash scene took over her care and transported her to Hospital General, where she was admitted in critical condition.

Officers launched a search for the attackers, but they had already fled the area. Witnesses said the gunmen were possibly Cuban nationals, although that information had not been officially confirmed. No arrests have been reported.

The shooting scene was cordoned off while investigators from the State Prosecutor’s Office processed the area and recovered the body. An investigation is underway to determine the motive and identity of those responsible.
