Cancun, Quintana Roo — A gas explosion ripped through a home in Cancun’s supermanzana 219 Tuesday night, killing a 16-year-old and injuring six others, including two children, authorities said.
The blast occurred around 8 p.m. on Calle Tabasco with 95, behind the Kabah shopping plaza, according to emergency reports. Firefighters, civil protection personnel, and Red Cross paramedics responded to the scene.
Three victims — a 15-year-old, a woman, and a man — suffered third-degree burns over their entire bodies and were rushed to the General Hospital in critical condition, hospital sources said. Their prognosis is guarded.
The body of a 16-year-old was found inside the home, prompting the State Prosecutor’s Office to take over the investigation.
Authorities said the explosion appeared to be caused by a gas leak. Some neighbors reported gunpowder was stored in the house, but officials have not confirmed that.
