Mayor Estefania Mercado cuts the ribbon at the Hecho en Playa store in the Tren Maya station

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Mayor Estefania Mercado inaugurated the “Hecho en Playa” store at the Tren Maya station on Monday, aiming to boost the local economy and promote the city’s identity to national and international visitors.

The store provides a platform for local producers, artisans, and entrepreneurs to showcase and sell their products without any cost, ensuring that profits go directly to the creators.

“Today is a very special day because we are opening a platform for our people,” Mercado said. “A platform so that the talent of Playa del Carmen has more opportunities, and so that those who work every day with their hands, creativity, and effort can show the world what they are capable of.”

The mayor emphasized that behind each product is a story of effort, families betting on a better future, and entrepreneurs who started in small workshops, kitchens, or community spaces.

“This space is yours,” she added. “This store exists thanks to those who never gave up, who keep betting on Playa del Carmen, and who show every day that local talent can compete with anyone when given an opportunity.”

Mercado also highlighted that the store enhances the social and economic impact of the Tren Maya by serving as a window for visitors to discover the municipality’s cultural, artisanal, and productive wealth.

“We want those who come to Playa del Carmen to take not just a photo or a souvenir, but a piece of who we really are,” she said. “Playa del Carmen is much more than its beaches. Playa del Carmen is its people!”

The mayor thanked President Claudia Sheinbaum and Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama for supporting projects that create development opportunities and strengthen strategic infrastructure in southeastern Mexico.

Estefania Hernandez, Secretary of Economic Development and Investment Attraction, reported that more than 171 brands are now part of the “Hecho en Playa” strategy. The new space allows over 30 producers, artisans, and entrepreneurs to exhibit and sell their products at no cost.

Attendees included Eduardo Asencio, honorary president of the DIF Playa del Carmen system; Guillermo Brahms Gonzalez, municipal treasurer; and Lieutenant Nelson Cabrera, operations manager of the Tren Maya station in Playa del Carmen.
