Suspected Marijuana Packages Wash Ashore Near Tulum

Tulum, Quintana Roo — Security forces from all three levels of government deployed to a coastal stretch between Akumal and the Bahía Príncipe hotel complex on Tuesday morning after about 25 kilograms of suspected marijuana washed ashore.

Citizens alerted the 911 emergency line to several suspicious packages on the beach, prompting the Interinstitutional Operational Group (GOI) to respond.

Officers searched the area and found bundles wrapped in tape and plastic bags, apparently carried in by the sea. They weighed approximately 25 kilograms of dried plant matter resembling marijuana and seized the shipment.

Municipal and state police, the Mexican Navy, the Mexican Army and the National Guard took part in the operation, setting up a security perimeter while investigators processed the scene.

The packages were packed and transferred to federal authorities, who will conduct lab tests to confirm the type and weight of the substance. Federal prosecutors have opened an investigation to trace the origin of the cargo and determine whether it is linked to criminal activity.

No arrests have been reported. Authorities continue to investigate how the suspected drugs reached this stretch of the Quintana Roo coast.
