Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Residents of the Marsella 3 subdivision reported the presence of heavy machinery on a property that had been previously shut down by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) due to the destruction of local flora and fauna for residential development.

Violation of Federal Orders

The developer, Promotora Residencial, responsible for the Marsella IV project, openly disregarded the closure seals imposed by Profepa last Wednesday. Despite the federal intervention, machinery operations and deforestation continued as if no legal restrictions existed.

The closure was initiated following a public complaint by the scientific collective Cenotes Urbanos, led by speleologist and biologist Roberto Rojo. The group documented that the developer had blatantly misrepresented environmental impact data in its official filings. While the project claimed only five wildlife species were present in the area, Cenotes Urbanos identified over 200, including vulnerable and endangered species such as the blind eel.

Ecological Impact

The affected wildlife includes birds, reptiles, mammals, and amphibians. The destruction of their habitat increases the risk of these animals invading urban areas or being killed in road accidents, a scenario already observed in zones like Playacar.

Despite the federal seals, the developer resumed work without hesitation, highlighting weak legal enforcement in Quintana Roo.
