Tulum, Quintana Roo — The deteriorating condition of the road to Punta Allen has raised concerns among residents and local officials, with the upcoming Beach Festival and Easter holiday season approaching.
Community delegate Guadalupe Cocom said authorities are negotiating with state and municipal governments to address the 20-kilometer access road, which currently has deep irregularities, sand accumulation, and potholes that hinder vehicle traffic, especially compact cars.
“It’s very deteriorated, there are many dunes and very deep sections; there are areas where cars get badly damaged and some have even gotten stuck,” Cocom said.
She explained that state authorities conducted an initial review after community requests and had agreed that machinery would begin preliminary scraping and leveling work last week, but the intervention did not happen as scheduled.
Cocom was recently informed that state government personnel were returning to the area to meet with the roads committee and define short-term actions. Among the alternatives being considered is scraping the road to temporarily level it for vehicle traffic during the coming weeks, particularly for the Easter holiday season.
A more extensive intervention with state machinery is planned for May, in coordination with the Tulum Municipal Council. The proposed scheme would have the state government provide necessary machinery while the municipality contributes material to reinforce the road surface, as has been done in previous years.
The road rehabilitation is particularly important for the community due to the Punta Allen Beach Festival 2026, scheduled for April 4-5. Residents believe having a passable road is essential to ensure visitor arrival and the development of planned activities during the event.
While concrete actions are being defined, community authorities continue monitoring negotiations with relevant agencies, aiming for work to begin promptly and ensure mobility to this area located within the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.
