Costa Mujeres Hotels to Benefit From New Cancun-Isla Blanca Highway

Construction of the new Cancun-Isla Blanca highway in Quintana Roo, Mexico

Cancun, Quintana Roo — The new Cancun-Isla Blanca highway will not only enhance the destination’s image but also improve mobility for vacationers, workers, and suppliers in the area, according to Marissa Setien, executive director of the Costa Mujeres Hotel Association.

Setien said the road, once completed, will resolve mobility issues and help prevent accidents caused by potholes and unpaved sections on the current road leading to Costa Mujeres, a rapidly growing destination that now boasts 11,500 hotel rooms.

She called the government’s investment in the infrastructure project a wise move, noting that the area needs a road befitting the tourist destination Costa Mujeres has become.

The new highway is expected to ease daily traffic for thousands of domestic and international tourists, as well as the movement of operational staff and suppliers who regularly service the area’s hotels. Setien also said the road will provide greater safety for drivers.

Currently, numerous traffic accidents occur in the sector, where construction lacks adequate signage. A few days ago, a fatal crash occurred when a private pickup truck collided with a worker transport bus, killing the female driver. The bus driver said he could not maneuver in time to avoid the accident due to the roadwork.

The first phase of the Cancun-Costa Mujeres boulevard will cost 183 million pesos (about $10.2 million), roughly six percent of the total budget of 2.7 billion pesos (about $150 million) that the federal and state governments have allocated for the project, which will connect the municipalities of Benito Juarez and the mainland zone of Isla Mujeres.
