Cancún, Quintana Roo — Tren Maya is developing a new tourism strategy called “Tren de Cancún,” offering packages of three to 13 days that combine train travel with hotels, parks, cultural centers and recreational attractions across the Yucatán Peninsula.
Manuel García Morcillo, head of the Corporate and Commercial Strategy Unit at Tren Maya, announced the initiative during the K’íiwik World Maya Tourism Fair. He said Cancún and Mérida have become the railway’s busiest stations, each handling just over 28,000 passengers per month.
“We are developing a project called Tren de Cancún, where we aim to leverage all the advantages of the state as a tourism platform to strengthen train travel,” García Morcillo said.
The state-owned railway already operates as a certified travel agency, allowing it to design and sell tour packages. The new plan involves formalizing agreements with hotels, cultural sites, entertainment venues and local authorities, with the goal of finalizing partnerships before the end of the year.
Two years after all 34 stations became operational, Tren Maya has seen a 60% cumulative increase in passenger numbers compared to its first year. In 2026, ridership is up 11% over the same period last year. The company aims for a 30% annual increase, supported by promotions and new packages.
Mexican travelers remain the primary users. Among international visitors, the United States leads, followed by Canada, while France, Spain and Brazil are growing markets. Tren Maya has signed more than 19 letters of intent with tour operators after participating in trade fairs in Spain and promotional activities in China.
García Morcillo highlighted the service’s competitive fares, including discounts for local residents, students and a “Mexico Fare” for domestic travelers. The company is also preparing special promotions for the upcoming holiday season and plans to launch a restaurant train featuring a renowned chef from Mérida before the end of the month.
Federal investment is currently focused on completing the cargo system, which García Morcillo said will significantly boost the railway’s economic capacity and regional development.
