The 30th Congress of Girls and Boys for the Environment is currently being held at the Cozumel Island Museum. The event, organized by the Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC), features primary school students from the island and members of the Ts’unu’un Birding Club from Felipe Carrillo Puerto municipality. The theme of the congress is "Restoration of the Earth, Desertification, and Drought Resistance."
The congress is part of the World Environment Day celebrations and is coordinated by the Youth for Conservation group, including members Ramón, Sophia, Dylan, Ana Lucia, and Hari. The three-day event offers a range of activities aimed at raising environmental awareness. These include talks, games, discussion groups, sharing experiences, and wildlife monitoring.
The congress kicked off with a reading of the poem "Promise of the Earth" by a young participant named Alberto. This was followed by a keynote presentation on the Environmental Services of Bats by biologist Noel Rivas Camo. Members of the Ts’unu’un Birding Club also delivered a talk on "The Role of Childhood in Bird Conservation", and previous participants shared their experiences of how the congress has positively influenced their environmental awareness and actions.
The event concluded with a lecture on the "Importance of Sea Turtles for the Ecosystem", presented by biologist Ricardo Peralta Muñoz. The congress was overseen by Daniel Villanueva Garduza, the general operational coordinator of the FPMC. He emphasized the foundation's ongoing commitment to promoting science, raising environmental awareness, and encouraging community involvement in environmental care and habitat restoration.
