Chetumal, Quintana Roo — State authorities are conducting technical studies on Chetumal’s Megaescultura monument to assess its current condition and determine its future, officials announced. The structure has remained closed to the public for years without a clear purpose.
The monument recently returned to state government custody, prompting a review of its physical and operational status. Authorities aim to identify necessary maintenance actions and evaluate whether it can be assigned a new use.
A comprehensive technical diagnosis is underway to evaluate different areas of the structure. The assessment will identify damage, deteriorated zones, spaces suitable for intervention, and the investment required for rehabilitation.
Officials noted there is currently no defined timeline for completing the studies or an allocated budget, though they are exploring potential funding sources for conservation needs.
The intention is to restore functionality to the space, which has remained largely inactive for years without serving consistent cultural, tourist, or social purposes. This inactivity has raised questions about the monument’s viability and utility.
Currently, the Megaescultura only sees sporadic use for some events in exterior areas, while its interior remains closed to the public—reflecting the functional abandonment that has characterized the site for several years.
The technical review has reopened discussions about the future of the emblematic monument, whose lack of real use and prolonged closure have made its maintenance a controversial topic.
