Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The 2026 Cheese Festival, known locally as the “Most Delicious Fair of Quintana Roo,” will take place May 2-3 to mark the city’s 128th anniversary, officials announced.
The event will run from 5:00 p.m. along Avenida de los Héroes, between Avenida Álvaro Obregón and Carmen Ochoa de Merino in downtown Chetumal. Organizers expect 15,000 attendees to enjoy food, cultural events, and talks centered on Edam cheese, a key ingredient in the region’s traditional dish, queso relleno.
Edam cheese, commonly called queso de bola for its spherical shape and red wax coating, arrived in Quintana Roo in the 18th century via Dutch imports sold at Mexican ports. Its wax coating allowed it to stay fresh for months without refrigeration, making it a staple in local cuisine.
