CFE Threatens to Cut Power to Squatters in Tulum After Nine Years of Unpaid Bills

CFE workers inspecting electrical infrastructure in Tulum

Tulum, Mexico — The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has threatened to cut off power to residents of 13 irregular settlements in Tulum after they have allegedly been tapping into the grid without paying for electricity for over nine years.

Around 10:30 a.m. on Monday, squatters gathered outside Tulum’s municipal palace to protest the CFE’s plan to disconnect their service. Municipal offices were closed for the day, but Jhonny Monsreal Padilla, the municipal secretary, arrived to negotiate with the group.

A working table was formed with a representative from each settlement, and after two hours, they reached a consensus. Authorities have requested that each neighborhood install an electricity meter.

In recent days, the CFE requested intervention from public security forces to disconnect the squatters, who have been illegally connected to the power grid for nearly a decade without paying a single peso.
