Cancun’s ‘Tardes de Baile’ Dance Program Aims for Guinness World Record

Cancún, Quintana Roo — The popular cultural program ‘Tardes de Baile’ in Cancún has officially launched its bid for a Guinness World Record, according to Carlos López Jiménez, director of the Benito Juárez Institute of Culture and Arts.

López Jiménez said the institute has started the paperwork to assess the feasibility of the record attempt and to understand the requirements set by Guinness World Records. The goal is to organize a mass dance event in 2027 that could achieve a world mark.

The proposal involves setting a date to gather the largest number of people dancing simultaneously for several hours, possibly using relays, in line with Guinness guidelines.

‘Tardes de Baile’ has become one of the municipality’s most successful cultural offerings, drawing more than 2,000 attendees each Sunday in a family-friendly atmosphere, López Jiménez noted. He added that public response has been so strong that when weather forces a cancellation, regulars express disappointment because the event has become a tradition for hundreds of families and seniors.

Beyond the record attempt, the institute is also working toward having the program recognized as intangible cultural heritage in the future, as it meets the criteria once it reaches the required age.

The official said the project is part of a broader strategy to preserve and strengthen cultural expressions that have taken root in the Cancún community, positioning ‘Tardes de Baile’ as a key cultural reference point for the city.
