Cancun Woman Hit by Jet Ski May Be Left Quadriplegic

A woman lies in a hospital bed after being hit by a jet ski in Cancun

Cancun, Quintana Roo — A young woman struck by a jet ski while on the shore of Playa Gaviotas in Cancun’s Hotel Zone may be left quadriplegic, according to family members.

Julia Vazquez Rivera, known to relatives as “Julita,” remains hospitalized after the accident Sunday afternoon. She suffered fractures to her pelvis and ribs, and doctors have not yet released a prognosis. Family members say there is a risk she could become quadriplegic.

Two people were detained at the scene for operating the jet ski under the influence of alcohol, authorities said. However, the investigation continues to determine who rented out the watercraft and under what conditions the service was operating.

Four other people were also injured in the incident and were taken to the same hospital, though Vazquez was the most seriously hurt.

The family faces uncertainty over medical costs and a lack of support from those involved. Officials have not disclosed the legal status of the detained individuals.
