Cancún, Quintana Roo — Cancún is set to strengthen its position as a leading sports tourism destination in 2026, hosting more than 60 national and international events that are expected to generate significant economic revenue and international visibility.
Gabriel Aguiñaga, coordinator of federated sports for the Municipal Institute of Physical Culture and Sports of Benito Juárez, said that between 60 and 70 events across various sports disciplines will take place in Cancún this year. He noted that each event typically generates stays of two to three days per person, along with tours, meals, and accommodation, providing crucial economic boosts during low tourist seasons.
In recent years, Cancún has evolved from hosting traditional athletic races and triathlons to staging world-class competitions that attract thousands of international visitors.
“The most recent example was HYROX Cancún, held from March 13 to 15, 2026, at Malecón Tajamar,” Aguiñaga recalled. “That fitness racing competition brought together 35,000 people, including athletes and attendees from 16 countries, and generated an economic impact of 266 million pesos, according to Mayor Ana Paty Peralta.”
At the national level, sports tourism now accounts for 10% of tourism GDP. Federal Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez Zamora reported that in 2026, this segment will maintain an economic impact exceeding 64 billion pesos, with one in every 10 international tourists visiting Mexico for sports purposes.
Events held in the first half of 2026 include HYROX Cancún (March 13–15, Malecón Tajamar, 35,000 attendees, 16 countries); AsTri Cancún Triathlon (April 6, Playa Langosta, with Sprint, Olympic, and WomanUp distances); Cancún Half Marathon (April 27, over 1,700 runners in 5K, 10K, and 21K); and L’Étape Cancún by Tour de France (May 4, Malecón Tajamar, third edition, 60K and 115K routes).
Upcoming events for the rest of 2026 include the Soca Cup, an international soccer tournament ahead of the World Cup; numerous 5K, 10K, and 21K races (Cancún hosts over 40 races annually); as well as swimming, cycling, and water sports competitions as part of the National Sports Tourism Strategy.
Aguiñaga concluded that each international sports event positions Cancún as a competitive and safe destination, directly impacting its global tourism reputation.
