Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Benito Juárez city council has launched a free campaign called “Let Your Identity Shine! Pride Month” to facilitate legal gender identity changes on official documents for transgender and non-binary individuals.
The initiative, coordinated by the Municipal Secretariat of Welfare, the General Directorate of Welfare, the Directorate of Attention to Sexual Diversity, and the Civil Registry, is part of LGBTQ+ Pride Month activities.
During the campaign, trans and non-binary people can obtain a new birth certificate recognizing their self-perceived gender identity at no cost, eliminating economic and administrative barriers that have historically hindered the process.
Municipal authorities said the campaign represents a significant step toward building a more inclusive, equal, and human rights-respecting city. Having official documents that match one’s gender identity allows people to access medical, educational, employment, and legal services with greater security and dignity, avoiding discrimination or social exclusion.
The campaign also aims to raise awareness about the importance of legal identity recognition as a fundamental part of the well-being and emotional health of LGBTQ+ individuals.
Three locations to submit documents
To facilitate access, the city council has set up three service points in Cancún where applicants can submit their documentation in a safe, confidential, and discrimination-free environment:
- Civil Registry Office 01, next to Parque de las Palapas
- Offices of the Directorate of Attention to Sexual Diversity
- COBUS 101 module in Supermanzana 101
Service hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The document reception and validation period will remain open until Friday, June 5, 2026. Authorities recommend arriving early to review any potential issues with the paperwork.
Requirements
According to guidelines from the Quintana Roo State Civil Registry, applicants must present original and two copies of:
- Updated birth certificate
- Valid official ID
- Recent proof of address
- Updated CURP downloaded from the official RENAPO platform
Staff will provide guidance and support throughout the process to answer questions about documentation, forms, or administrative procedures.
Authorities have also made available a phone line (998 130 9854) for legal advice, psychological counseling, and assistance with birth certificates issued in other states.
