Cancún, Quintana Roo — Residents of the Villas Playa Blanca condominium complex, located across from the iconic Playa del Niño in the Puerto Juárez district, are demanding that municipal authorities immediately increase police patrols and establish formal operating hours for the beach.
The request comes as an urgent measure to curb noise pollution and excessive alcohol consumption by visitors at night, which residents say undermines the peace and safety of families living in the area.
Benito Juárez City Council Secretary Pablo Gutiérrez Fernández said the municipal administration is directly addressing residents’ requests to restore order to the area. However, he categorically denied rumors circulating among the public about a possible privatization of the public space.
“Regarding Playa del Niño, what is being worked on is an ordinance for this important and emblematic area of our municipality, specifically addressing neighborhood complaints,” Gutiérrez Fernández said, emphasizing that access to the coast has not been closed and will not be closed, given the public and federal nature of the destination’s beaches.
Despite the official clarifications, unofficial reports in recent days indicate that the ordinance plan includes a time limit for parking lot use, restricting access after 5:00 p.m.
This possible measure has begun to generate uncertainty and discontent among regular local beachgoers, who argue that the site has always been freely accessible, allowing them to enjoy the beach even at night.
Meanwhile, Villas Playa Blanca residents reiterated that intervention cannot be postponed, as on weekends and holiday seasons the beach becomes a center of uncontrolled gatherings.
Those affected hope that working groups will produce clear regulations that reconcile the right to public recreation with respect for the community’s rest.
