Police and emergency vehicles at the scene of a shooting in a Walmart parking lot in Chetumal, Quintana Roo

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — A man died after being shot in the parking lot of a Walmart supermarket in Chetumal on Thursday afternoon, with authorities clarifying that the victim was not a member of the Mexican Navy as initially rumored.

The victim, preliminarily identified as Cristopher, 35, succumbed to his injuries at a naval hospital after being transported from the scene. Police officers from the Public Security Department first responded to the shooting and began transporting him in a patrol vehicle. Red Cross paramedics intercepted the official unit en route to take over the transfer and provide pre-hospital care.

Despite these efforts, the man died shortly after arriving at the hospital. Authorities have not yet announced an official motive for the attack.

Unofficial reports about the assailant(s) vary. Some accounts suggest more than one person may have been involved, while others indicate a single attacker fled the scene on a red motorcycle. Witnesses described the suspect as dressed like a delivery driver and carrying a black box.

This detail has raised concerns given the large number of delivery workers in the city. The area is equipped with C5 surveillance cameras, which authorities are expected to use in their investigation.
