Cancún LGBTQ+ Community Prepares for Pride March Amid Progress and Persistent Challenges

Participants gather for a Pride March in Cancún, Mexico

Cancún, Quintana Roo — With the Pride March approaching, Cancún’s LGBTQ+ community is preparing to take to the streets in a context of growing visibility but persistent challenges in inclusion, rights, and safety, according to Ricardo López, president of Cancún Pride.

López noted that while his team has participated in the last four editions, the city has hosted more than a dozen marches over the years, establishing itself as a key space for sexual diversity expression. However, he acknowledged that significant gaps remain in ensuring equitable conditions.

Among the main issues, López pointed to a lack of institutional support in areas like healthcare services, legal advice, and access to job opportunities. He said they are currently in talks with authorities to achieve greater openness and backing for the LGBTQ+ population to reduce these disparities.

Regarding safety, López warned that it still cannot be guaranteed that someone from the diverse community can express themselves freely without fear of discrimination or abuse. He noted that stigmas and cases of homophobia persist, even within police departments, where he considered it urgent to reinforce diversity training.

On the possibility of more than one march this year, López explained that another group is organizing a parallel mobilization, though without providing further details. However, he emphasized that the common goal is to strengthen the visibility and unity of the movement.

Finally, he called for avoiding divisions within the community and betting on collaboration between groups, stressing that the fight for rights and respect must remain firm and united in Cancún.
