Cancún, Quintana Roo — More than 7,000 people are expected to attend the Cancún Parade this Saturday, April 18, celebrating the city’s 56th anniversary, according to Carlos del Castillo, director of Distrito Cancún.
In an interview this morning, the city promoter and event organizer said the parade will showcase a good representation of Cancún as it moves through the downtown area.
He noted that participants will include members of various civil associations and social groups, pioneers, and personalities who have played fundamental roles in the city’s construction and development.
The parade will begin at 5 p.m. on Saturday, starting at the Jacinto Canek Gymnasium and concluding with a brief route ending at Plaza de la Reforma in the Municipal Palace.
When asked about attendance growth for this annual downtown event, del Castillo said organizers don’t aim to surpass previous years’ numbers.
“Our main interest isn’t to have a massive parade,” he declared. “We had 26,000 people one year and then reduced it to 7,000. Why? Because our interest is that the parade represents all the different aspects of Cancún and creates good images, not just for the children who come, but also for tourists who watch.”
Calling this weekend “the most intense of the anniversary,” del Castillo said the Identity Rally will also take place, an event designed to reinforce civic pride and historical memory.
The program includes a solemn City Council session where Carlos Constandse will receive the “Sigfrido Paz Paredes” Medal for his social contributions to the city, particularly his work with the Red Cross.
One of the most anticipated events will be the free concert by Los Ángeles Azules, scheduled for Sunday at Malecón Tajamar, one day before the city’s official anniversary.
Additional events include the “History of Soccer in Cancún” conversation on Thursday, April 23 at the 8 de Octubre Theater; the presentation of the book “The First Cancún” on April 29 at the National Library of the Chronicle; and the painting of the “My Identity” mural on April 30 at the INBAL-associated School of Artistic Initiation, located at the Alfredo V. Bonfil elementary school in Supermanzana 22.
Del Castillo commented that these activities aim to show that Cancún has developed its own identity and unity through its young history.
