Cancún, Quintana Roo — Authorities have announced plans to construct a new bridge called Kukulkán in Cancún, which will serve as a complementary route to the nearly completed Nichupté Bridge. The announcement came during a public briefing by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo on April 9.

Governor Mara Lezama revealed that the Nichupté Bridge, a flagship project aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in the Hotel Zone and along Kukulkán Boulevard, is scheduled to open later this month. The Kukulkán Bridge will be built at one end of the Nichupté Bridge and will span 770 meters across Quintana Roo Lake.

The new bridge will feature an access ramp from start to finish, four lanes, and a central median. While it remains unclear whether there will be a toll, officials expect it to be free like the Nichupté Bridge, helping to improve mobility for residents and visitors and reduce travel time between the Hotel Zone and the rest of the city.

The Nichupté Bridge project, initiated at the request of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and continued under the current administration, includes a bike lane and a dedicated public transport route. Although an exact opening date has not been specified, Governor Lezama indicated on social media that final touches are being completed, with the bridge expected to open by the end of April as previously projected.

The inauguration date has shifted in recent months, with initial hopes for an early 2026 opening delayed by construction and other events in Cancún. Officials now say everything is nearly ready to conclude the Nichupté Bridge project and begin work on the Kukulkán Bridge.
