Orange Walk, Belize — Belizean authorities have publicly identified two pilots arrested last week while transporting more than half a ton of cocaine destined for Mexico’s Quintana Roo state. The Belize National Police released names and photographs of Edgar Aguilar Trinidad and Paul Valenzuela Osuna, who were captured red-handed during the seizure of an aircraft in the Neuland area.
The illicit flight was tracked by international radar from its departure in South America. After entering Belizean airspace, security forces activated immediate interception protocols, locating the aircraft shortly after it landed on a clandestine airstrip in Corozal district. Police quickly seized the 551 kilograms of high-purity cocaine and captured the pilots before they could escape.
Authorities also arrested two Belizean citizens found near the landing site, allegedly responsible for providing logistical support to unload and transport the drugs into Mexican territory. This group formed part of a transshipment network ensuring the cargo reached its final destination, exploiting the district’s geography to evade surveillance.
The publication of the suspects’ names and faces marks a turning point in the investigation, which now focuses on identifying the masterminds behind this transnational operation. Belizean police have urged the public to cooperate with any information that could help uncover this criminal cell’s connections.
Background of the Seizure
On April 11, Belizean authorities conducted a precision operation that secured a substantial drug shipment in an area bordering Mexico’s Othón P. Blanco municipality in Quintana Roo. The joint action by the Belize Defence Force, Coast Guard, and National Police resulted in the interception and seizure of an aircraft loaded with what authorities described as a multi-million dollar drug shipment.
The operation followed intensive radar tracking and ground deployment, culminating in the Neufeld area where authorities confirmed the confiscation of approximately 1,200 kilograms of suspected cocaine. The success was preceded by a key alert earlier that morning when patrols secured a vehicle containing jet fuel and communication equipment near the seizure site.
This logistical discovery allowed security forces to anticipate the contact point, surprising the aircraft operators mid-operation. Two people were detained at the site and turned over to judicial authorities to determine their origins and links to transnational cartels.
The Neufeld area in Orange Walk district remains under strict security cordon by elite units. The deployment aims to safeguard both the cargo and aircraft while locating possible escape routes or temporary storage facilities the criminal network might have established in this hard-to-access zone, strategically used for its proximity to trails leading to southern Quintana Roo.
