Illegal Vape Vending Machines Targeted in Quintana Roo

Authorities removing an illegal vape vending machine in Quintana Roo

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The fight against vapes in Quintana Roo remains a constant challenge. While personal possession and consumption are permitted, the sale, distribution, and importation of these devices are strictly prohibited and penalized. The recent reform to the General Health Law aims to tighten control to curb the use of vapes, especially among minors.

Jaime Torres Viveros, head of Cofepris, reported that during the year, inspections have been conducted and approximately 23 vending machines have been removed in several municipalities, including Othón P. Blanco, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and Benito Juárez. However, the devices continue to appear in shopping malls and public spaces, highlighting the need for constant vigilance.

Upon detecting a machine, authorities seek to identify those responsible to notify them of the removal. In most cases, the owners comply with the instruction; only when they refuse is the State Attorney General’s Office involved, which is responsible for securing the equipment. “People generally understand that it is prohibited and remove the product, but there are cases of recidivism that require legal intervention,” Torres Viveros specified.

Recently, the Chamber of Deputies approved constitutional reforms that completely prohibit the use of vapes and electronic cigarettes in Mexico, imposing penalties of up to eight years in prison for their commercialization. The measure recognizes vaping as a risk to public health and will allow for the implementation of stricter policies to protect vulnerable groups and reduce dependence on these products.
