Mexico City — Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) has expanded into the United States airport market with the acquisition of URW Airports, LLC in a deal valued at $295 million, giving the Mexican operator commercial operations at three of the largest airports in the country.
The transaction was carried out through ASUR US Commercial Airports, LLC, a subsidiary that acquired all shares of URW Airports, previously owned by Westfield Development, Inc., a subsidiary of Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield.
Following the deal, the acquired company will operate under the name ASUR Airports, LLC. From that base, the Mexican group will look to broaden its role in developing and managing commercial initiatives tied to airports and passenger terminals in the United States.
Operations at Los Angeles, Chicago and New York
The expansion adds commercial operations at strategic terminals of John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), among the main air travel hubs in the United States.
In Los Angeles, ASUR Airports will manage selected commercial programs in Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 6, as well as the Tom Bradley International Terminal and its West section.
At Chicago O’Hare, the operation covers Terminal 5, while at JFK it will span Terminal 8 and the New Terminal One.
ASUR said the acquisition is part of its international expansion strategy and strengthens its platform of commercial concessions at US airports, while opening the door to new airport and terminal development projects.
The group currently holds a portfolio of concessions to operate, maintain and develop 16 airports across the Americas. Its operations in the continental United States will be consolidated under the ASUR Airports brand and led by a local team with industry experience.
