Armed Attacks in Cancún, Cozumel, and Chetumal Leave Teen Dead, Child Injured

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Police and military forces launched a major operation across three Quintana Roo cities after a wave of armed attacks left a teenager dead and a child seriously injured.

In Cancún, a rideshare driver reported being robbed at gunpoint on Avenida 127. Armed men intercepted him and stole his vehicle. Unconfirmed reports also mentioned a possible kidnapping. Authorities later responded to two reports of gunfire in different parts of the city — one in the Urbi Villas area of Rincón Buenavista and another where only bullet damage to house facades was found. Municipal police, Mexican Army units, and other agencies deployed search operations in the area.

On the island of Cozumel, a 16-year-old boy was shot and killed in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood. Another young man was wounded and taken to the General Hospital. The State Prosecutor’s Office processed the scene while personnel from the Mexican Navy, the Army, and State Police secured the area. No arrests have been made and the motive remains unknown.

In Chetumal, armed men opened fire on the home of a state police officer in the Centenario subdivision. A young girl was hit by a bullet and rushed to a hospital, where she was listed in serious condition. The area was cordoned off for evidence collection.

Authorities are investigating the causes of each attack and working to identify those responsible.
