Bacalar, Quintana Roo — The Terminal de Autobuses de Oriente (ADO) is in discussions with municipal authorities in Bacalar and federal agencies to establish a public transportation service to the Ichkabal archaeological zone, located 40 kilometers from the famed Laguna de los Siete Colores. The initiative responds to growing demand for improved access to the site, as visitors currently rely solely on taxis or private vehicles.

Addressing Transportation Gaps

Juan Manuel Díaz Zamora, ADO’s manager, confirmed that talks are advanced and that connectivity options—including the use of the Tren Maya station in Bacalar or ADO’s bus terminal—are under evaluation. "We are assessing the potential number of passengers to determine the appropriate fleet size for this service," Díaz Zamora stated.

Since its opening, Ichkabal has lacked direct public transportation, limiting tourist access to the historically significant site. With the holiday season approaching, negotiations are expected to accelerate as interest in visiting the ruins continues to rise.

Expanding Regional Connectivity

In addition to the proposed Ichkabal route, ADO has bolstered services to Mahahual, operating six daily departures from Chetumal. The company is also considering a new Cancún-to-Mahahual route to further enhance mobility options for tourists in the region.

Boosting Tourism and Local Development

The establishment of a dedicated transportation route to Ichkabal would not only improve visitor access but also drive tourism growth in Bacalar, fostering economic development and reinforcing the area’s appeal as a travel destination.
