Yucatan Intensifies Mosquito Control on Coast Ahead of Easter Holiday Surge

Health workers conduct fumigation operations in Yucatan coastal areas to combat mosquitoes

Yucatan, Mexico — Health authorities in Yucatan have launched an intensified mosquito control operation along the state’s coastline as thousands of visitors arrive for Easter holidays, aiming to prevent outbreaks of dengue and chikungunya.

The “Coastal Operation” runs from March 23 to 30 as part of the First National Campaign Against Chikungunya and Dengue 2026. Health brigades are conducting intensive fumigation in coastal zones and communities with high epidemiological risk.

The Yucatan Health Department is deploying 68 health workers and 34 operational vehicles to cover 1,960 hectares across 16 coastal communities. The targeted areas include Dzilam Bravo, Santa Clara, Chabihau, San Crisanto, Telchac Puerto, Chicxulub Puerto, San Felipe, Río Lagartos, Las Coloradas, Progreso, El Cuyo, Yucalpetén, Chelem, Chuburná Puerto, Sisal, and Celestún.

State officials urged residents to support the effort by maintaining clean yards, eliminating water-collecting containers, and allowing access to properly identified health personnel.

The operation represents the state government’s preventive approach to public health, prioritizing community protection against mosquito-borne diseases during peak tourist season.
