Yucatan Farmers Boost Sales With Direct-to-Consumer Market

Farmers selling fresh produce at a local market in Yucatan

Mérida, Yucatán — About 250 farmers from across Yucatán gathered this weekend for the fourth edition of the Mercado Renacer del Campo Yucateco, a state-backed initiative that allows producers to sell directly to consumers and cut out middlemen.

Blanca Chan Poot, a pumpkin seed producer from the municipality of Tecoh, said the market has been key to expanding her customer base and securing new business opportunities.

Vendors offered a wide range of locally grown and processed goods, including vegetables, honey, citrus fruits, legumes, sauces, dairy products, organic eggs, and ornamental plants.

Amir Tun, a producer of heirloom corn tostadas from Timucuy, noted that the market helps establish direct connections with consumers and build commercial partnerships that strengthen family economies.

The event ran from April 24 to 26 at the Ek Balam Hall of the Yucatán Siglo XXI Convention Center, as part of the larger Expo Campo 2026 trade fair. The state’s Rural Development Secretariat organized the market as part of a strategy to promote direct sales and reduce intermediaries in the supply chain.
