Tekax, Yucatan — Yucatan’s tourism sector needs young, trained talent to seize opportunities offered by the state’s Magical Towns, professionalization, and new tourism products, officials said.
Tourism Secretary Dario Flota Ocampo delivered a lecture titled “Yucatan: Destination with Identity, Talent and Future” to students at the Universidad Tecnologica Regional del Sur (UTR Sur) in the Magical Town of Tekax.
Flota Ocampo presented an overview of Yucatan’s tourism landscape, its importance to the state and national economy, and the attributes that distinguish the destination, including national and international recognitions.
The event is part of the Renaissance Maya government’s vision, led by Governor Joaquin Diaz Mena, to consolidate tourism as an engine of economic and social development that generates well-being in municipalities.
A central theme was the role of Magical Towns in Yucatan’s tourism offerings. Flota Ocampo highlighted Tekax’s potential as one of the most representative destinations in the south, thanks to its historical, cultural, and natural wealth. He cited attractions such as the Ermita de San Diego de Alcala, its hills, Grutas Chocantes caves, adventure tourism options, and natural surroundings.
Flota Ocampo also presented the 2026 Comprehensive Training and Tourism Competitiveness Program (Picct), aimed at improving service quality and promoting professionalization. He invited students to use the program’s online learning platform, which offers courses open to university students interested in strengthening their skills.
The secretary urged young people to professionalize their tourism vocation, take advantage of their academic training, faculty support, and business partnerships to enter an industry with ample professional and personal development opportunities.
Tekax Mayor Manuel Vallejos Sansores attended the event and encouraged students to value their municipality, get to know it deeply, and become promoters of the attractions that distinguish the south of the state.
UTR Sur Rector Melba Larizza Lugo May thanked Flota Ocampo for his visit and noted that the training students receive will enable them to become future entrepreneurs, business owners, or managers in the tourism sector, both public and private.
Also present were Tourism Program Director Nayely Aldana, Outreach Director Olga Escalante, Finance Director Margarita Murillo, Career Director Francisco Esquivel, and Planning Director Abraham Puch, along with faculty and administrative staff.
